10 Winter Highlights in St. Anton am Arlberg

What makes a winter holiday in St. Anton am Arlberg so special? We – Lisa & Martin – grew up here and know our Arlberg inside and out. We've put together our 10 personal winter highlights for you: from skiing and our favourite cross-country trails to a cosy tobogganing evening right on our doorstep.

1. Skiing the Arlberg – 300+ km of Slopes, One Ski Pass

The boards that mean the world – for us on the Arlberg, that's clearly our skis.

Whether it's carving skis with razor-sharp edges for perfectly groomed pistes at full speed, wider freeride skis with more rocker for unforgettable off-piste runs, or a playful twin-tip for tricks in the snowpark: everyone at the Arlberg is ski-crazy – in the best possible way.

The Ski Arlberg resort connects St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zürs and Warth-Schröcken into one of the largest interconnected ski areas in Europe. With over 300 kilometres of pistes, 88 lifts and legendary freeride terrain, there's something for every level. The same goes for cool snowboarders, of course.

Omaela Tip: Our apartments are just 50 metres from the Nasserein gondola. Step outside, click into your bindings and go – it doesn't get shorter than that. In our heated ski room with lockable ski lockers, your skis and boots will be warm and dry the next morning.

Good to know:

  • Ski Arlberg: 300+ km of pistes, 200 km off-piste routes, 88 lifts
  • Season passes and day tickets: stantonamarlberg.com
  • Nasserein gondola: 50 m from Omaela, direct access to the ski area

2. Private Sauna After a Day on the Slopes

What could be better than relaxing tired muscles after a long day on the piste? The soothing warmth seeps into your body – a wonderful contrast to the icy temperatures outside.

At Omaela, you don't even have to leave the house: each of our four apartments has its own private Finnish sauna. You decide – a gentle 60°C or a hot 90°C for experienced sauna-goers. Add your own infusion as you please – we're happy to provide a selection of sauna fragrances.

Afterwards, slip into your bathrobe, step onto the balcony and take in the snowy mountain landscape. For us, one of the most beautiful rituals of a winter holiday.

Good to know:

  • Private Finnish sauna in all 4 apartments
  • Bathrobes and sauna towels included
  • Alternative: Public indoor pool WelCom with sauna, steam bath & outdoor pool (approx. 10-minute walk)

3. Cross-Country Skiing in the Verwall – Our Favourite Trail

For us, this isn't a fringe sport – it's real training and one of the most beautiful nature experiences on the Arlberg.

Our top recommendation: the 10 km trail into the Verwall valley. The track follows the natural terrain, with gentle climbs and exhilarating descents. At the Wagnerhütte, there's a cosy spot to rest. Then it continues, well-fuelled, around the Verwallsee, whose partially frozen surface glistens in the winter sun. The stunning scenery, the silence and the physical effort – this is definitely one of our highlights.

If you prefer something shorter: the trail in St. Christoph sits right in the middle of the ski area. Afterwards, we recommend stopping at the popular Thaja – perfect for bringing your pulse back down.

Omaela Tip: You can reach the Verwall trail entrance by car (don't forget the parking disc) or by bus line 3. Cross-country ski rental is available at the sports shops in town.

Good to know:

  • Verwall trail: approx. 10 km, classic & skating, easy to intermediate
  • St. Christoph trail: approx. 3 km, located within the ski area
  • Stanzertal trail: 10-minute walk from Omaela, heading down the valley

4. Tobogganing & Night Tobogganing at the Nassereinbahn

Our 4 km natural toboggan run offers a winding descent where you can build up serious speed. The run starts at 1,850 m at Gampen and is easily reached by the Nasserein gondola – practically right on our doorstep.

The thrilling ride through the winter forest takes about 15 minutes. Midway, the Rodelhütte Thonys offers a cosy stop for food and drinks – often with live music on the sun terrace.

The absolute highlight: every Tuesday and Thursday, the night tobogganing event takes place (6:00 – 9:00 PM). The run is illuminated and the Nasserein gondola takes you up. The fun toboggan ride through the dark winter forest under floodlights is truly a special experience – for families, couples and anyone looking for something unique.

Omaela Tip: The Nasserein gondola is just 50 metres from our apartments. Rental toboggans are available directly at the Nasserein base station. The gondola ride for night tobogganing is included in the 6-day ski pass.

Good to know:

  • Natural toboggan run Gampen: 4 km, starting at 1,850 m
  • Access via Nasserein gondola (50 m from Omaela)
  • Night tobogganing: every Tuesday & Thursday, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
  • Rental toboggans: at the Nasserein gondola, sport shops or at Thonys (toboggan hut)

5. Après-Ski – A Little Party Never Killed Nobody

The best thing about après-ski in St. Anton: the party starts early, so you're fit for the slopes again the next morning. Yet no compromises are made.

Whether traditional hut fun, Schlager hits or modern music – the choice is huge. St. Anton has après-ski locations for every taste: from cosy mountain huts to the legendary Mooserwirt, from the cool Krazy Kanguruh to the Sennhütte. Just go with the flow and enjoy the fact that everyone here is celebrating the good life.

But don't forget: you still need enough energy to ski safely back down to the valley at the end.
