Skiing in February, March & April in St. Anton am Arlberg

Mid-February – and it has snowed heavily again. The mountains around St. Anton are freshly covered, the pistes are in excellent condition, and the freeride slopes are waiting for fresh tracks. For anyone thinking "the season is nearly over": think again. At the Arlberg, the ski season runs until 19 April 2026 – and the second half of winter is something special. We – Lisa & Martin – actually love these weeks the most. Fewer crowds, more sunshine, better vibes. Here's our guide to why skiing in February, March and April at the Arlberg is absolutely worth it.

February – Powder, Cold Temperatures and the Best Freeride Conditions

For us, February is one of the strongest ski months of all. Snow depth is typically at its peak, temperatures keep the snow cold and dry, and regular fresh snowfall delivers first-class conditions – on-piste and off.

For freeriders, February is often the best month on the Arlberg: the north-facing slopes at Rendl, the terrain around the Valluga and Schindlergrat, or the Albonagrat offer legendary runs after fresh snowfall. Important this winter: avalanche danger is particularly high due to the layered snowpack. We strongly recommend going off-piste only with experienced, local mountain guides.

On the groomed pistes, February is equally perfect: grippy snow, good visibility, and those who visit midweek often have the runs almost to themselves.

What makes February special:

  • Best snow depth of the season, cold temperatures
  • Ideal freeride conditions (only with a guide!)
  • Midweek quieter than the Christmas/New Year period
  • Perfect conditions for cross-country skiing in the Verwall valley
  • Evenings: private sauna at Omaela, night tobogganing every Tue & Thu

March – Sunshine, Pistes and Terraces

Something special happens at the Arlberg in March: the days get noticeably longer, the sun gains strength, and skiing takes on a completely different quality. Grippy pistes in the morning, a break on a sun terrace with views of the snow-covered peaks at midday – and a few more runs in the soft afternoon snow.

We call it "snow + chill" – and for many of our guests, it's the best way to experience the Arlberg. No stress, no queuing, just pure enjoyment.

March is also when the social scene in St. Anton really comes alive. The sun terraces at the mountain huts are buzzing, the atmosphere is relaxed, and there are more events in the evenings than during the darker winter months.

What makes March special:

  • Significantly more sunshine hours than January/February
  • Perfect mix of good snow and spring feeling
  • Sun terraces at the huts and on Omaela's balconies and terraces
  • More relaxed atmosphere, less crowding at the lifts
  • Longer days = more time on the slopes

April – Corn Snow, Festivals and the Grand Finale

April is our insider tip. Most people think the season is over – but at the Arlberg, April is when the real celebrations begin. The ski season runs until 19 April 2026, and the final weeks are among the very best.

Corn Snow Skiing

From late March into April, corn snow (Firn) forms on the pistes – a granular, soft snow surface that's fantastic to ski in the late morning after it softens. Corn snow feels like floating: the snow gives way, and turns draw themselves. For many experienced skiers, it's the finest snow type of all.

Tanzcafé Arlberg Music Festival (4–19 April 2026)

The Tanzcafé Arlberg is THE spring event on the Arlberg – and probably the most relaxed music festival you can imagine on skis. Over two weeks, bands and musicians perform at various locations across St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zürs: on sun terraces, in hotel lounges, on festival stages – and all concerts are free of charge.

From jazz to pop to electro-swing – the mix is eclectic, the atmosphere unique. Skiing in the spring sunshine during the day, a concert on a terrace in the afternoon, a gig in a hotel bar in the evening. That's how you end a ski season.

2026 acts (selection): Julian le Play, AVEC, Bella, Möwe Live, and many more. → Full programme: tanzcafe-arlberg.com

Der Weisse Rausch – The White Thrill (18 April 2026)

The legendary season finale: 555 participants start simultaneously from the Valluga ridge at 2,640 m and race 7.5 km and 1,350 vertical metres down to the valley – including the notorious "Schmerzberg" (pain mountain), a 150-metre climb in the middle of the course. A spectacle you have to see – whether as a participant or spectator.

Der Weisse Rausch traditionally marks the last ski day of the season. The lifts close the following day, 19 April.

What makes April special:

  • Corn snow: perhaps the finest snow type for skiing
  • Tanzcafé Arlberg: 2 weeks of live music, free admission (4–19 April)
  • Der Weisse Rausch: legendary cult ski race on 18 April
  • Warmest temperatures of the season, T-shirt weather on the terraces
  • Fewest crowds – the quietest weeks of the entire season
  • More affordable accommodation than peak season
