5 highlights for your autumn holiday in the Arlberg
The golden autumn on the Arlberg is becoming more and more popular - and we have put together 5 points that should not be missed on an autumn holiday in September/October here on the Arlberg. With fresh mountain air, perfect temperatures for hiking and biking as well as great colours and breathtaking panoramas.
1 - the Verwall
The beautiful Verwalltal is our "all-rounder": Whether sunshine, rain or snow - our Verwall is always worth a trip and should not be missing from your bucket list on your Arlberg holiday. It's up to you to decide whether you want to explore the Verwall by bike, e-bike, on foot or by bus.
2 - "Langer See"
A wonderful tour by mountain bike or e-bike: through the Verwall, past the Konstanzerhütte to the "Schönverwall". There you walk from a water catchment to the "Langer See", a wonderfully situated mountain lake with a great panorama. Don't forget your camera, because the landscape is wrapped in wonderful colours in autumn.
3 - Schnanner Gorge
Breathtaking and wonderfully cool is the (newly rebuilt) path through the impressive Schnanner Klamm gorge in Schnann am Arlberg (incidentally the hometown of Martin, your host). A path leads through the rocks high above the stream into the gorge and over suspension bridges and hiking trails you reach the dam wall. This serves an important purpose, because the small Mühlbach, which flows calmly downhill in good weather, can turn into a raging river during thunderstorms and heavy rain. Then the dam ensures that the village of Schnann is protected from major damage. The theme trail station at the entrance to the gorge also provides exciting information about this!
4 - Dumpling Trio at the Darmstädter Hut
The trail is long and steep, but the reward is well worth the sweat: after a steep start at the old Rendlbahn cable car, the route leads through the Moostal valley past Alpe Tritsch and Alpe Rossfall up to the Kartell reservoir. From there, the route leads along mountain paths to the Darmstädter Hütte, which is beautifully nestled on a hill in the middle of the mountains. This ~12km route can be tackled either on foot (approx. 5 hours), in a sporty manner on a mountain bike or in a somewhat more relaxed manner (although still challenging!) on an e-bike. On the Darmstädter you are always well catered for - but please be sure to try the Knödl trio there, which gives you energy again for your tired bones. Delicious!
5 - Sunrise at Hirschpleis
Sunrise tours or sunset hikes are fantastic, especially in autumn - on the one hand because you have a bit more time in the morning (due to the later sunrise), and on the other hand because the light is even more beautiful and warmer at this time of year.
The Hirschpleis-Kopf is perfect for a sunrise tour from Omaela. Either as a bike&hike tour or (as in our case) as a car&hike tour ;) By bike or car to the Putzen-Alpe, then on foot to the Leutkircher Hütte and from there it's just a few metres up to the Hirschpleis-Kopf. Allow at least 2.5 hours to avoid stress shortly before sunrise. We recommend starting at around 5 a.m., in our case sunrise was exactly at 7:36 a.m. The headlamp should not be missing, of course, as well as the camera to capture the wonderful moments before, during and after sunrise.
Bonus - Arlberg via ferrata
Views as far as the eye can see and exciting 4-6 h of climbing at lofty heights: the Arlberg via ferrata thrills adrenaline junkies and athletes, especially in autumn.
Important:
- Galzig, Valluga and Kapall cable cars should definitely still be in operation
- the weather should be safe
- don't start too late to have enough time for the many panoramas and also not to miss the descent with the Kapall cable car!
We have already done it (and will certainly do it again soon!) - here is our story:
Events in autumn
Mountain Yoga Festival, Almabtrieb or the weekly Tyrolean evening: there are also numerous events in autumn that are definitely worth a visit. All events can be found on the website of the St. Anton am Arlberg Tourism Association:
